Hyophorbe

Distribution: 5 species endemic to the Mascare Islands, 1 each on Rodriguez & Reunion, 3 on Mauritius & Round Island

LPG Area: Madagascar Drive, Masoala Trail

Close Relatives: Pritchardia

A.k.a.: Bottle palms, spindle palm (H. verschaffeltii)

Growing Comments: Hyophorbe palms love our environment and are extremely easy to grow. They can all take full sun.

Hyophorbe seeds are relatively east to clean and will germinate in a couple of months.

Hyophorbe indica

H. indica is by far the fastest growing and probably rates about a 6.5 on a 1-10 scale. It will grow from an overall height of 3 ft to 20 ft or so in 5-6 years.

Hyophorbe lagenicaulis

H. lagenicaulis, which is a fairly popular garden palm in Hawai'i (under the common name "Bottle palm") has been the slowest for us, at a 3.5- 4.0 on the 1-10 scale.

Hyophorbe verschaffeltii

H. verschaffeltii is the largest of the three Hyophorbe species in our garden and rates about a 4.5 on a 1-10 scale.
